One day of last week for lunch time and small exercise purpose, I went to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum at Ueno park to see “Turner from the Tate: The Making of a Master”. Just 30 minutes walking from my office, I can enjoy many cultural things in Tokyo.
Turner, Joseph Mallord William Turner：1775-1851 is most famous painting artist from UK. Generally, Japanese people well knows about Italian & French painters who drawn of religious and historical painting. Turner had made growing up position of landscape painters. Therefore he is great master.
Actually, when I was 20 years old, I looked into the Tate Gallery (Tate British from 2001) in London for my first travel in UK. His paintings gave me strong impression on existed British painter. And I have memorized his name on famous European painters.
After that, I had many chances to go there because I stayed in London for business and school. However my last visit to the Tate was in 1990.
So I want to see his paintings in the exhibition in this time.
The museum was so busy by many visitors in spite of lunch time on weekday.
It was limited about my time for seeing, then I used a voice guidance tool to get quick information about each paint.
Landscape paintings of Turner have many things such as “Composition”, “Colors” and “Story”, I think.
I am a photographer, so I normally try considering about three things for seeing paintings or pictures.
“Composition”, his painting has realistic layout and dynamic angle. It gives us the viewer were standing on the same position as him. He is like a scope photographer of the event.
“Color”, his base was water color painting. And his oil painting has showing technique like a water color one. And he was color testing by mixing color to make his imaged one.
This is so interesting challenge to make color on landscape painting, I think.
And “Story”, the theme of his painting is linked to his history on the life. He wanted to make upper position of his painting field. We can see his life history and background by seeing his painting. Also we can see his policy. This is the same thing as today’s artists and photographers to create work of art.
This is fun to read information from paintings which was drawn over 200 years ago.
I could enjoy in it for autumn of art in spite of short time.
The exhibition will be opened until December 18th, I recommend you to visit.
